Domain Login without domain prefix

  • Is it possible to have a domain login to RS with out having to have the domain prefix. I know this can be done with a local login but I want to manage everyone with AD. It gets old having to explain to everyone that they have to type    domainblah\username

    TIA for any replies!

  • Not using reporting services but should be the same as Exchange, and other IIS services that require login - under your IIS web site properties you will find a directory security tab, on which you should find an authenticated access tick box to which you can add a default domain.

  • Where are they actually being asked to enter their credentials?  The virtual directory should have windows security enabled by default (I thought the installer set this).

  • Thank you  James for the suggestion I'll look into that.

    Steve,

It's when they access the site it self. I don't have anonymous access enabled.

I have been testing different logins and I have found a few interesting issues. First I am using my login which is a Domain Admin (W2K Domain) which is a member of the Local Admins Group on the RS Server (W2k3).

When I am logged on a W2K machine (with my domain admin account) and I use that same login for RS Reports I can just put in my user name and password no need to specify the domain in the Domain Field, but if I don't specify the domain prefix on a WK3 or any other XP machine (aside from mine-not sure why) then it logs me on to the HOME folder with out any access to the other folders.

Not sure what the difference of how W2K and W2k3 handles user credentials. But there is obviously a difference.

  • It sounds like you could be using basic authentication.  Is there a need for that or could you switch to windows integrated?  We use integrated so there is no prompt at all.  If you need to stick to basic then James' suggestion re: default domain should sort it out.

    Steve.

  • Nope.  I have windows integrated authentication enabled for the website and the virtual directories.

  • I guess I'm left scratching my head as to why you're getting prompted at all?  We run RS (sp2) on a W2K3 box that's basically a member server and no users get prompted for credentials.  There's nothing in your logs (RS logs or system event logs) to indicate there's issues??  Possibly something in the security log?

    Steve.
