Hi,
Quick question…
Does SSRS 2005 require Exchange Server to email reports? Does it require any components of Exchange Server?
And input would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

you will need smtp server to send the emails

Ok, that seems right. I was just told that the reason our organization does not use reporting services is because exchange server, which we do not have, is a requirement to email reports therefore, because we don’t have exchange server we can’t use SSRS.
Thanks for you input!

You'll NEED smtp server to send mail. PERIOD. No matter what tool you'll be using to generate the reports.

It is the only bit of functionality that is lost in SSRS, you can still do everything else. Also you can setup reports to export to filepaths or sharepoint automatically rather than email.
You don't need your own exchange server, there are email providers that will allow you smtp send access.
But I am suprised that a company that is running SQL server doesn't have an SMTP server that they use for the critical email alerts from the database.

No, we do have SMTP server we just dont have "MS Exchange Server". I send emails out of SQL all the time. I WAS TOLD that Without Exchange Server you cannot deploy email reports out od SSRS. Thats what I was asking about.

I've never done it with smtp, but apparently it's doable.
