Yes, it runs on a Virtual Server, you need to have minimum hardware for the Virtual Server and your OS in the Virtual Server has to have the required OS for SQL Server 2008.

We run SQL 2008 in VMware vSphere and it flies.
Things to consider...
- 64bit
- = or > 6 GB RAM depending on how hard it'll be hit, more RAM you have the happier SQL will be
- Fast multi-core xeon cpu's
