I'm having a support discussion regarding sql server 2005 SP2. The question
is what kind of support will microsoft provide for SP2 after 1/14/2010 (the retire
date for SP2 based on this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-us&p1=2855&x=1&y=4
)
I'm assuming support is based on the verbage in the following document:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/retired
Basically I think if we call Microsoft for assisted support they will say it
support is no longer availalbe for SP2.
Is my "assumption" correct? Is my basic summorization of the "call" support
accurate?

End date is 01/12/2010 as per the link you provided.
Yes your assumption is correct through, after that date when you call MS for support they will state the lifecycle for that service pack level has ended and you must be at SP3 for them to provide support.

I don't think they will not support you. Rather, if they run into some issue, they won't produce a hotfix/QFE for that version. You can still call MS for SQL 2000 support. They'll try to help you, but they will not order or produce a patch if you do not have a service contract.

I think you are both right. I think they will give you off the shelf hotfixes that have already been developed for SP2, but will not develop a new one. I'm really trying to find identify the risks of staying on SP2 verses upgrading to SP3. The bigger the hammer (risks) I can find the better the arguement for using resources to upgrade.

It is very difficult to get a straight answer about this issue. I know that when we were using SP1 Microsoft absolutely would provide NO support after the 4-2008 deadline.
We had to crank up to SP2in Oct. 2008. Then we received help from MS.
But my question is that for the 1/14/2010 deadline it shows "retiring sp2" and if you look at the chart on the website.... http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=2855
It shows Not Applicable for "Mainstream Support End Date".
Bottom line question... What is the absolute last day I can be on SQL 2005 sp2 and MS support us?
