Does It required to install Workstation components, BOL In Production Box

  • Hi,

    I Installing SQL Server 2005 x64 in a production Box and Iam choosing the installation paths for

    1.Database engine -> D:\Programfiles\Microsoft SQL Server

    2.Integration Services -> D:\Programfiles\Microsoft SQL Server

    3.Clien Components -> D:\Programfiles\Microsoft SQL Server

    4.Workstation components, BOL ?Does it required to install on Production Box? can we skip this?

    And in above path, after the installation:

    1.A folder called 'common files' and Microsoft SQL Server (x86). Is this normal or Iam doing any mistake while selecting the installation path for the services?

  • you don't need bol.

    you don't need the workstation components (I haven't installed sql on a box without the client components already installed but would be very surprised if not shocked if it was a requirement)- but without them you will have to manage sql remotely and when your cpu is running at 99% and you haven't enabled the dac over remote connections you won't be able to do anything.

  • That looks fine. The Common Files (X86) part is just for anything 32-bit that SQL needs. It's usual when installing on 64-bit boxes.

    You don't need BOL and client components, but they can come in quite handy and don't generally take a critical amount of disk space. If you find that you can't connect to the server remotely, it can come in handy to have Management Studio and BOL right on the server. Not a common need, but it has come up before.
