Does Integration services also need to be installed for SQL2005 or SQL2008 database maintenance plans (integrity, update statistics, backups, etc..) to work properly???

I believe you had to have SSIS installed on pre-SP2 SQL Server 2005 installs. Might have been SP1 that changed this - but, I don't recall.
Definitely post SP2 2005 does not need SSIS installed, and that includes all versions of 2008.

You should be able to create them without Integration Services installed but I believe if you want to deploy the package and schedule it, then you need integration services running.
