Does full text indexing affect server performance?

  I want to give the subscribers of my site the ability to search through their PM inbox.

  The column that will be searched on is a text field, whist I understand that this can be achieved by using full text index on the column I was wondering a) whats the best way to go about it and b) whether implementing this would have an overall noticable affect on the performance of the server?
