Does adding additional files to the TempDB require downtime?

    I am not moving the main data file and/or the log file locations, just adding additional files

    can't... this is a production server and need to know if SQL is going to take advantage of the additional data files immediately

    Ok, so you don't have permission. I was able to add it to my local server and I have just ran a simple test to insert into temp, both my old file and new increased in size. So I think the answer is yes.
