I know this is a basic question, but I've got myself confused and I'd be grateful if someone could just confirm how this works.
Am I right in thinking that :
A full database backup does not truncate the transaction log.
The normal way to truncate a transaction log (assuming Full Recovery Mode) is to run a full db backup followed by a transaction log backup.

You're correct a full database backup will not truncate the log you do have to run a seperate transaction log backup to so this.

I my testing of restores, I found it better to backup the transaction log PRIOR to doing the full backup. I can't explain it, but using the way you propose resulted in a couple of restore failures (fortunately in testing), but I never had issues the other way.
