Not sure if this is in the right forum, but I thought maybe this is the best match.
I am soon going to be starting a task to look at and investigate how several systems work. These systems all use SQL Server 2000/5/8 as a back end database.
I need to understand what these systems do, but most importantly I need to document this in a way other SQL professionals can understand.
Does anyone know of the best practices to do this or does anyone out there have any example templates I could look at to gain some inspiration?

I actually found your post while searching the archives for the same material. What I came up with is the following information that I'll be using to document the many databases I have to take responsibility over. Believe me, I'm no happy camper for having to do this kind of stuff and would rather pistol-whip those before me, but hey, what a learning experience it will be!

All the above gave me a good start and the tools I found here and other places do soooo much of the work for me that I know I'll be up and running with documentation in no time. Hope I've helped!

Not sure if this is still an issue for you but Red Gate's SQL Doc tool is awesome. You choose the level of what you want to document and then choose an output format and it rips through it really fast. The nice thing is that it can dump out html files that can be very easily navigated.
