Do I have to re-install SQL Server 2005, in order to get RS?

  • I installed SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition onto a new Vista machine.  During the installation process it told me that some of the services couldn't be installed because IIS wasn't installed on the machine.  Later I learned that the service it was referring to was Reporting Services.  Well, I would like to install it, so I would like to ask what I need to do in order to put it on.  I would think that all I would have to do is put the installation DVD back in and go through the steps that I did; is that correct?

  • Copy the contents of the DVD to your hard drive then install IIS and rerun setup and choose repair and Reporting services will now be enabled so you can select it because without IIS in the box the installer just grey out Reporting Services so your cannot select it.  Hope this helps.

  • Gift, I've installed IIS after I realized my mistake.  Would that be sufficient in order to install Reporting Services now?

  • Yes that is all because now the installer will enable Reporting Services as one of your options when you rerun Setup.

  • Gift, et al,

Last night I tried putting the SQL Server DVD into my laptop, being certain that IIS was now installed, but when I tried to put Reporting Services on, it refused, again, to do so.  The installer claimed that either IIS wasn't installed, or it was disabled.  I took a look at the Services applet, and it looks like it is running to me.  I also brought up the browser and surf over to http://localhost, and the IIS home page came back as easy as you please.

    So, what's going on here?

  • I don't know what you mean by putting DVD into Laptop but what I mean is you should copy all the DVD content to your hard drive, then rerun setup and choose repair.  I found this problem by accident I was issued a Laptop at work without IIS installed, when I got to choose components I noticed Reporting services disabled so I stopped the install to see if I have IIS and no there was no IIS so I went Control Panel Add/Remove program then Add components to Accessories and added it and rerun setup and everything was installed.  So make sure you have .NET 2.0 Framework installed, IIS added and rerun setup from your hard drive and watch the installer very closely if not you could miss something that will end your install.  This is assuming you are running XP pro service pack 2.  Keep me posted it is not complicated.  Hope this helps.
