Hello, I am preparing to use Diskpart.exe for the first time to extend a SQL SAN volume. This is a Win2003 server so I have to use Diskpart command line, not Win2008 GUI. Info is here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325590.
I am trying to find out how it affects SQL. I can't tell whether SQL has to be stopped (obviously safest approach) or if Diskpart can be used on the fly while SQL and databases are in use.
thanks for thoughts

SQL can be running when diskpart is used.
Run into this a number of times and SQL doesn't even need to be restarted..
Win 2008/Win 2008R2 for sure.

Thanks. Have you used it on a Win 2003 server running SQL? Just want to ask since you say "Win 2008 for sure."

I haven't used it in 2003 with SQL running so I can't be as 100% certain, but I'm like 98% certain. It doesn't take the colume offline, it updates the partition map. The new space is available but uninitialized, a lot like a quick format, it lays down enough to make the drive live but doesn't lay out the entire structure..
In retrospect if I asked myself the question whether I felt it was safe I wold say yes and do it.
