% Disk Time vs Disk Reads/sec + Disk Writes/sec

  • Hi there,

If I am capturingDisk Reads/sec + Disk Writes/sec (on Total basis), why do I need % Disk Time_Total counter?

Is there a real benifit to this?

    Thanks for suggestions

  • Not if you known the thruput capabilities of the disk sub-system, which is almost never known.

Personnaly, I never bother with Disk Reads/sec or Disk Writes/sec but only collect "%Disk Time", "%Disk Read Time" and "%Disk Write Time" for each drive, not in total. If disk time is greater than 80%, then I know that the disk system needs to be investigated and start looking at "current disk queue length".

  • Carl, two questions:

By "thruput capabilities of the disk" do you mean I/O capacity for the drives, like 100 I/O/sec?

Also, why do you look at individual disks, what if you have RAID or SAN subsystem?

    Thanks
