Hi check the sys.backup_devices table for these and get the physical filenames.

I tried running the following query:

    select * from sys.backup_devices

the query returns a blank table.

    Best regards

  • Hi Everyone:

Wooh Found the problem :). thought I'll post in case someone having a similar problem. I discovered the System Admin was running a backup job every night at 11:00 PM. he is using the system restore utility BackupExec from Symantec.

So when BackupExec runs somehow it is updating the system Database in SQL. my understanding was if we are to you use BackupExec to do SQL backups, then we would need to purchase the agent for SQL.

I am not sure why the system restore backup is witting to database???. so I am currently negotiating with System Admin to come up with a plan. I read in a BLOG called ( SQL Backup and restore best Practise) some advises one of them was ( Trust no one). therefore I am not going to trust the System Admin for backing up the Databases I am responsible for :-D.

The system Admin suggested to do Full every morning and then differential at the end of the day, this beside the hourly log backups so there are no backup jobs in between. my question is that a good strategy and also can I restore just using Full and logs in case of crash during the day.

Finally I would like to thank all the people that helped me resolve this issue

  • It might be good to run a trace and see exactly what is being executed by BackupExec.

His job doesn't show up in one of our queries ?
