Differential Backups

  • Morning all,

I currently run a full backup nightly and transaction log backups every 30mins from 7am til close of business. I plan on implementing diffs every 2 hours to reduce restore time. What I was wondering is; if I run a diff backup between two transaction logs say on the quarter past the hour, what happens my transaction log. Does it get flushed

In the above situation there are 15 mins of transaction which will be backed up by the diff but also backed up by the next trans log backup. Is this right or wrong. It seems kinda silly and I don't thing SQL Server is that silly; whereas I am Wheeeeeeeeeeee.

I really need to get some good sleep.

  • The diff, I believe, flushes the logs, but I'm not sure. You'd ahve to test it and verify that you could restore (or not) using only the full and logs.
