Differential backup.

  • hi,

Can anyone let me know please....

I have a full database backup running on the server at 1 am. Diff bkp job is running in every 4 hrs, run intervals : 5 am, 9 am, ...

when the 5 am diff bkp job runs and when the next diff bkp runs by 9 am, will the 9 am bkp contain the details after the 1 am full database backup all the details or after the diff bkpo which ran by 5 am?

    Thanks.

  • It will contain all changes since the Full backup

So, If you backup FULL at 1am, then DIFF at 5am, 9am, 1pm, 5pm, 9pm.

To restore at 7pm, you need Full at 1am, Diff from 5pm, plus any TX logs between 5pm and 7pm

  • Hello,

will the log backup clear the log once backup done and will the intermediate log backup affect diff backup?

  • Performing a log backup will make the log as re-usable, allowing the already allocated space to be re-used.

Log backups do not affect the differential backup.
