Hi,
What is the difference between shrinking and truncating logs and how do they effect the backup and restoration's.

truncating the log will remove any inactive entries but not reduce the actual physical file size.
shrinking the log will reduce the physical file size,
but it's worth noting you cannot shrink a log beyond the portion of the file that may conatin any active transactions. Check BOL for an overview of how transaction logs are designed and work

Not that you shouldn't be shrinking the log regularly. It should have enough space, without physical growth, to hold all entries between log backups.
