Developing on SQL 2005/Visual Studio 2005

  • Hi all

I've got a bit of a n00b question.  I'm developing a product that's expected to take roughly a year.  We decided that since by the time it is released, MS Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 will have been release, we should write it using those technologies.

I suspect that all will go well, for the most part.  My concern is that the process of upgrading from beta versions to release versions of both of those products will likely introduce compatibility issues.  Does anyone have experience with previous MS Betas leading to release as far as compatibility?

We're getting a server to run team system 2005 on, and it will also be our SQL 2005 server.

    Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

  • Robert,

My understanding is that there is an upgrade path between different betas therefore I would expect there would be an upgrade path from a beta to the version proper.

The interim-beta releases (called CTPs) do NOT have an upgrade path. You have to uninstall before re-installing and even then there are problems as I recently found out - though this would be expected from a product that is in beta.

Don't take any of this as read. If I were you I would seek clarification from your Microsoft account manager (or similar) if you have one.

  • Thanks!

So to make sure I understand you correctly: If we stick with 'official' betas and steer clear of preview versions we should be in good shape?

  • Er...probably. Don't take my word for it though.

  • I actually thought that the opposite was true, they (Msft) provide no upgrade path/s from beta to beta or beta to RTM.  I'm pretty sure that i can put this up here, so here is part of the beta 2 readme, where it's clear they didn't provide the upgrade from B1 to B2, and jamies right, the CTP's definitely don't upgrade.

I can't see why they would provide an upgrade from the last beat to the RTM either as you're not meant to be 'soing' anything 'production-ish' within the beta's anyway.  Makes it difficult when trying to write to the new produc though (ie to match the release date).

    HTH,

    Steve.
