Developer read access to prod diagrams

    Is there a way to give developers read access to the database diagrams on a production database? This would be extremely helpful to our devs.

    No. Only members of sysadmin or db_owner roles or the user who created the diagram can open it. The reason I've seen for this is that the diagrams aren't just documentation tools, they can be used to acutually change the database.

    That's why I used the qualifier "read access".

    I seem to recall seeing a workaround for prior versions of SQL Server. I was hoping they figured out a way to give developers this access without requiring DB ownership in 2008.

    Maybe next version.
