Dev Tools people use and why?

  • After seeing a couple threads where people have problems and the solutions are by third party tools, I was wondering what people use.

I hardly use QA and EM any more for development. Started using mssqlXpress.

It's a very nice tool which replaces most of the functions in QA and EM.

The developers are also quick to respond to comments / bugs (Not that there are many bugs 🙂

Any apps we should all know about or do the majority use the MS products?

    Any one use Embarcadero much?

  • Used Embarkadero at a previous job. Liked the ER/Studio, didn't like the Rapid SQL or DBArtison, but this was like 4 years ago.

Visio occassionally, but at this point, I tend to live in EM/QA.

  • Textpad. (Seriously)

Other than that I stay in QA mostly. I type faster than I can click a mouse (but I won't be breaking any speed records with either), so text-based methods are preferable.

  • I'm constantly on the search for a better tool. (Probably why I've started thinking about just making my own.)

    Mostly EM/QA.

For SQL Scripts I've started using UltraEdit32. It's a toss-up though with QA because I've started converting my old scripts and formatting them as templates sot that I can use the autofill function in QA.

UltraEdit32 is a marvelous text editor with a zillion features. The ones I like most are syntax highlighting (I found files for TSQL, ASP, HTML, VB and a ton more.) and column mode. Column mode is very simple thing that few text editors have. You turn it on and can select columns of text just like you do rows in other text editors. Great for cleaning up data.

  • I prefer not using a mouse. Find it much faster doing things with the keyboard.

It's the one draw back of mssqlXpress. There are some keyboard short cuts that are missing. They have said they are working on it.

Other than that, I find the app does everything for me I want (Short of solving problems)

  • Generally, I'm in EM and QA all the time but tend to work mostly in QA. Lately I've been working more and more with mssqlxpress.

Have used Embarcadero's Change Manager in a couple of positions, but there aren't many companies that are willing to pay out the bucks in recent times.

    Hope this helps

  • I used to use Codewright and loved it, but since I do little developement these days and Codewright is not used at the company where I am currently contracting, I got used to using just QA which, fortunately, is much better now in 2000.
