Details to collected from sql servers for upgrading to 2012 version.

    Hi,

    We have some 10 SQL Server 2008 servers which management has decided to upgrade to SQL Server 2012 version soon.

    I need to collect all the necessary details from existing sql server 2008 servers and give to management.

    What are the details I need to collect from these servers, that will be necessary for upgrading to SQL server 2012 version ?

    +1 for Upgrade Advisor. You have not really specified any details as towards your existing servers, eg - are they OLTP? Or OLAP? How often are they going to be used? Reporting server? You say management has decided to upgrade but have they consulted the DBA? Daft question but are they upgrading to take advantage of 2012 new features? AlwaysOn, ColumnStore Indexes? What is the primary reason for the upgrade? Remember the licencing model has changed for SQL 2012.

    There are many, many issues to be aware of when upgrading/migrating SQL Server. I would suggest you read the 2012 Technical Upgrade White paper.

    Since you are upgrading to next version of SQL, the bare minimum would be to enure you run DBCC CHECKDB and update your stats, but as mentioned the Upgrade Advisor will pick *most* issues up. Planning and testing is everything. 😉
