Detaching/Deleting a "loading" database

    Hi guys and gals,

    I've recently done a restore of a database.  The backup software (Arcserve) assures me that the restore was successful, but the database is sitting in a "loading" state, and has been so for the past day or so.

    I've tried detaching it, but it says that the database is being used for replication.  I've tried sp_removedbreplication but it won't let me because "it is in the middle of a restore".

    So, Catch 22.  Anyone got any golden nuggets of wisdom they can dispense to me?

    You just restore database with recovery option, but make sure all backup has been restore to that database.

    I am going to assume that the database was backed up using the 'ArcServe agent'. If this is the case then your database may not be usable. I've tested various vendor backup solutions using 'agents' to back up live databases and was able to get all of them to fail at least 50% of the time on a restore (leaving an unusable database) behind. ArcServe seemed to be one of the worst. My advice is to try another backup. And moving forward perform your own database backups to disk and just let ArcServe take from disk to tape.

    I agree with Rudy and especially with ArcServer i have personally run into issues of the same kind. Like said most of the vendor backup solutions are that good, but got to say SQL Lite speed by Quest (formly Emceda) does work very good and saves space. U can download an evaluation edition from Quest site.

    Hi guys,

    Thanks for the advice.  As it turned out, it WAS just a ropey restore.  I ran it again and surprise, surprise it worked.

    We usually DO use disk based backups but due to storage constraints we can't keep a load of these lying around.  Therefore we use agents for monthly backups and store them off site.

    However, I've now taken to doing monthly backups of the monthly disk backups.  FAR easier
