Definition of SQL Server Process

  • SQL Server Processes - we all know them. But when recently somebody asked me "What exactly is a SQL Server Process?" I just mumbled "ah, mm.. user sessions and things going on on the server.." At least it is not a process on the operating system level.. Not satisfied with this I looked up my handbook for amins, the online help and even googled for it but nowhere seems to be a definition of "SQL Server Process". Now can someone here help me or is the question just too silly?

  • I would say it is an instance of Connection object with a certain Process ID (SPID) and all objects instaces for queries, actions, results etc. that have this particular SPID as a property. Implemented most probaly in C++
