I'm guessing you meant to say billions?
"What is special about DeepSeek?
According to his whitepaper, DeepSeek only cost 5.57 million dollars. This number is amazing compared to other AI technologies that invested several millions."

now that europe is lagging behind, it is mainly a question of which "partner" you trust most.
Since partnership is being smashed to pieces lately, foundations are shaking, but opportunities are growing

Your article prompted me to ask my favorite AI, Perplexity, about it's abilities to "deep think". Perplexity calls their similar service, "Deep Research" and free accounts have a limited number of deep research questions a day. That's probably all that I would ever need, especially since I haven't needed any deep research yet.
According to Perplexity, the output of a Deep Research could include a .pdf, complete with citations. I'd be curious if anyone has compared Perplexity's "deep" answers to deep answers from other AI/DeepSeek.
******
FYI: If interested, here's some more info about Perplexity's Deep Research option:
Deep Thinking in AI
Deep thinking refers to advanced AI capabilities that mimic human-like cognitive processes, such as deep reasoning, contextual understanding, and adaptive learning. Systems like Deep Think R1 exemplify this by leveraging neural networks and NLP to analyze complex data, identify patterns, and generate insights beyond traditional AI models.
Perplexity's Approach
While Perplexity doesn’t use the term "deep thinking," its Deep Research feature embodies similar principles. This tool autonomously conducts multi-source research, iteratively refines its understanding, and synthesizes comprehensive reports—mirroring human reasoning. It employs test time compute (TTC) expansion, a framework that systematically explores topics by breaking down queries, evaluating hundreds of sources, and reconciling contradictions.
Key Comparisons
Perplexity’s feature is freely accessible (with limits) and outperforms rivals like Gemini and GPT-4o in benchmarks like Humanity’s Last Exam (scoring 26.6%). It’s optimized for expert-level research tasks rather than generalized cognition.
********
Perplexity also gave me some examples of interesting prompts which would trigger Deep Research (or you can specifically ask for it).
"These require parsing dozens of sources, reconciling contradictions, and structuring a nuanced report—tasks Deep Research handles in 2–4 minutes."
ME: Interesting and amazing!

of course, it is obvious the gouvernement has its influence in deepseek !
I've asked it about gouvernement sensitive subjects, to which the western world may be interested in.
It started answering the question up to a given point where it erased its results and replaced it with something like "I'm not allowed to elaborate on this question".
I suppose it does the same with it's witty content !
