How do I Design a Decision Tree for Consolidation of various servers on SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 on a new hardware and different data center.
What are the things I need to consider when I make the Decision Tree, I mean the bullet points.
Thanks,

- I would start with the SQLServer upgrade advisor (SQLUA).
This will point to potential issues with your database(s).
- I would also run the Best practice tool, to see how compliant your current setup is and how your company can adapt within the same (migration) investment.
- If you can provide new feature alternatives for you current applications, or development short comings, that may catch some fund raiser attention, so you can "sell" the need for technology and get business sponsorship.
- What are you looking for with the upgrade ?
- does your current hardware still meet the sql2008(R2?) prerequisites ?
(do you need new hardware, are you willing to take the step to 64-bit if you can ?)
- are we talking dedicated sqlserver boxes ? (maybe other software may need specific hardware or software. Is that software supported if you run it with sql2008 ?)
I'm sure others will add their POI, as I will not have completed a full list ...
