My company is currently in the process of becomgin SOX compliant. We are setting up a development,test,and production server environment. I have downloaded the evaluation version of DBGhost but am not sure exactly where to start. Do you have to be using a version control program to use DBGhost. Any help would be appreciated.

What were your results with testing DBGhost? Did you like the product? We're looking at solutions too....

The evaluation period for DGGhost was not very long and we did not get a chance to evaluate the product thoroughly. We did end up purchasing another package by Red Gate software that included SQL Data Compare, SQL Compare as well as a few other programs. We are very happy with it.

How does SQL Data Compare work? Does it use triggers, add tables to the databases, read transaction logs, use trace procedures.... I'm concerned with performance and not adding anything to databases.

We are using the SQL Data Compare and the SQL Compare to keep our development and our production databases synchronized.
The SQL Data Compare looks at tables that you specify and compares the data in each table and allows you to move data one way or the other.
The SQL Compare will compare tables,stored procedures and other db objects and show the differences between the two. The program will create a script that you can either run in the SQL Compare program or copy into query analyzer and run.

We currently use DBGhost to achieve Canadian Bill198 compliance (SOX derivitive). DBGhost scripts off database objects with the exception of DTS (which we use redgate DTS compare) to Visual Source Safe, developers are setup in source safe to check in and out of source safe. DbGhost then looks at source safe and synchronises with the target server, producing a report on the changes made. Simple.
U can also use it for data and schema comparisons btween db's ondifferent servers (say development and qa or qa and production) and then it allows you to synchronise should you wish to.
RedGate cannot integrate with source safe therefore for sox compliance there is no safe source for SQL code control. You would need to tie down the sql server so much that no one has access to it.
We only allow DBA access to production and developers to development. Developers promote to QA with DBGhost but only dba's will promote from QA to production so that segregation of duty issues are complied with....but thats a whole new ball game !!

The Redgate stuff and DBGhost are developers tools and should not be used for auditing, you should either use SQL Watch from Quest.com or Lumigent Entegra. Depending on the level you need to go to.

I agree with Declan For SOX you have to use auditing products...
We are using Lumigent Entegra... It is not that good but all are these products are new so it will take some time to get the good one out...
