DBA Volunteer Opportunity

  • Hi all,

I have been working with this startup company for the past year and about to move on to bigger things so thought I would see if I could find somebody with at least a little experience that might be interested in something like this.

It's a small non-profit startup company based in Canada working on a graphical social media app with the theme being to protect children against online predators.  Aka... facebook killer.    They are very early in the db design process as the UI designs are almost completed and development has just begun.  It is challenging for sure starting from scratch but I'm sure some would find that a desirable project.  And it could lead to a paid job (as they say).

If anyone is interested or have questions, feel free to contact me.

    Much thanks,

    Jason

  • Which DB engine are they using, Jason?

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

  • Jeff,

It has not been finalized.  The design so far is tool agnostic.  I've pushed for SQL Server, but because of costs, it looks like it might be mySQL. We are actually finalizing that very soon so that we can load test data and do some testing

But definitely relational - as the whole system mostly revolves around a user.  But I am sure some of the subsystems will eventually utilize some noSQL databases. Just like most social media platforms use a hybrid approach.

  • Thanks, Jason.  I'm currently working my "dream job" and so I wasn't asking for me.  I was asking hoping that you'd answer just as you did to give the job and the related project tied to a very worthwhile cause, some visibility.
