I'm sure you will get several responses for third party tools such as RedGate or Idera, but for some free tools, you can read this:

I use a number of ApexSQL tools. Check out their web page (www.apexsql.com), see if there's anything you like. They have free trials for most of it.

RML Utilities - Microsoft SQL Server support team internal utilities for performance problem.

They are not 3rd party tools.

SchemaToDoc Enterprises (http://www.schematodoc.com) offers the following tools:
SchemaToDoc - Export database metadata to Word/HTML. Also lets you annotate tables, fields, and views.
DB Side-By-Side - Create xml snapshots of your databases' metadata. Compare any two databases or the same database at different points in time.
QueryToDoc - Export query results to a presentation document (Excel, Word, or HTML).

A great tool to help in monitoring and diagnose is SpotLight for SQL Server from Quest. It really works great and is a must to help troubleshoot issues with SQL server and/or the OS. You can download a trial version too.
LiteSpeed is a backup compression util that will compress your SQL backups. I get a 300 Gig database down to 30 Gig file!
Check out BI Documentor, it will fully document you database.
Hope this helps.

Full Disclosure: I am a "Friend of Red Gate" and I've been a VIP for ApexSQL, meaning I've gotten the versions I have for free.
I use both Red Gate and ApexSQL tools quite a bit. I've looked at Quest's tools as well as Idera's, and I'm happy with the vendors I just mentioned. If your budget is tight, you can't beat the prices Brian is offering on the ApexSQL side for some fine, fine tools. Red Gate's tools are nice, too, and I'm not just saying that because of the site. When you see the ease with which SQL Backup works and the GUI interface, you'll see what I'm talking about. We've converted to using it at my shop.

I use SqlSpec all the time, but I'm biased because I wrote it. 🙂
