I am just curious as to how often companies use an outsourcing company to fulfill their DBA needs. Are there many DBA specific outsourcing companies or is it primarily generic headhunters you have to go through?
This mainly stems from my need to take a vacation and I want to leave my cell phone at home this time. I don't have a backup DBA.

Extraquest (www.extraquest.com) is down the street from me in CO and they do Oracle and SQL. Most I think are for Oracle. There's also http://www.remotedbaexperts.com/.
NOTE: I haven't talked or used any of these services, so I'm not sure. Brian Knight and Andy Warren from this site do consulting as well, so you could ping them and they might be less $$.

Another company to consider in http://www.dbadirect.com
They can set up a proactive monitoring process so that in-house DBAs can spend more time on new development/design.

I have thought several times about having a backup dba but haven't proven to management the justification of such an expense...until I go on vacation. That is generally when they recognize the need. I think the problem is having enough for the backup to do when I am not on vacation.
