Hi,
I am a new DBA coming from the web field. I am managing 6-8 SQL Server 2005/2008 Databases on 4-5 Servers and would like to implement best practices for the day-to-day maintenance, backups, etc.
I have already purchased a couple Itzik Ben-Gan books for T-SQL (they are wonderful) and would like some recommendations for more DBA Best Practices books that focus on SQL Server management.

Itzik's books are some of the first I recommend. After that, get a copy of Kalen Delaney's book SQL Server Internals. Since you're just getting going, you might want to check out a book I wrote a few chapters for, Beginning SQL Server 2008 Administration. It has a lot of basic guidance for getting things set up. After that, you start to get into specialty books and it really depends on what you're looking to do with your time and your career.

Thanks, I am looking for more of a how-to for all the tasks a DBA may be doing so I think the book you contributed to would be a better option for me at this point.

Here's a great link from Brent Ozar's blog that's full of good information for a fresh DBA. 🙂 There's also lots for a not so fresh one.
