I've always said that if I was charged with developing a top-notch Accounting application, I would hire a top-notch Accountant who knew squat about programming and a top-notch Programmer who knew squat about accounting. I would pit that combination against an entire team of "programmers with a strong background in Accounting."
That being said, I do see value in a technical guy gaining an in-depth knowledge of the business. These make good technical managers and good technical managers are all too rare.
Not for me. When I die, they will be pulling my corpse off the keyboard.
