DBA and SQL developer

  • I am a SQL Server developer, but I also do most of the DBA jobs - backup and restore, create/delete/alter database, tables, grant and revote permissions, create user roles, linked servers.  But in my resume, I cannot write down I am a DBA.

Last time, when I worked as a contractor in a company, they were hiring a DBA, I tried to apply for the job but the manager said I was not a DBA.  Instead he hired a H1 visa Indian girl had 3 years of DBA experiences.  She came to US because of marriage and took some computer classes, she was major in political science in India.  After she took some classes, she worked in that college as a junior SQL Server DBA.

After a few months, the manager found out I could do a lot more than that girl. Sometimes I wrote some complicated programs or DTS packages, that girl could not understand what I was doing.  I had to give the DBA to put things in production and that girl screwed up a lot.  Then the manager admitted that he should hire me instead.

I teased him all the time when that girl screwed up.

But as I said, I cannot put 'DBA' in my resume and so I can never apply for DBA job.

  • What/Who is stopping you from putting DBA in your resume?

  • Only herself.  She might be a developping type dba (with less admin experience) but she's still a DBA.  But that'll happen only when she believes she is!!

  • You are right, I am a developing / application DBA not the administrative type.  But my job title is not DBA.  How can I put DBA in the resume even I am doing the DBA work.

  • Just put it.. or put developper / DBA.

Then when the interviewer asks you about that job, then you can tell what you were actually doing (and should be put on the resume too).

  • Wait a minute!  Does that mean that I have to put "bulldozer" in my resume?

    I wasn't born stupid - I had to study.

  • Not sure they would understand what it meant.  So you might get very interview requests .

  • I agree with Ninja's RGR'us' suggestion!

I have never put DBA on my resume yet get emails for DBA positions all the time - I got interviewed last week (& an offer letter) for a DBA job that required tearing down about a dozen databases and redesigning them - there was no "A" about the job at all...both the hiring managers as well as the HR people are terribly confused about the distinction between design/development and Administration - I read the requirements carefully first and if they lean towards replication, linked servers etc.. then I steer clear - mainly because I lack knowledge & experience -

On the other hand, you can put whatever you want to on your resume so long as you can back it up at the time of the interview...so if you've been doing dba stuff I don't see why it shouldn't be on your resume...

Ninja's etc...would you by any chance be related to a Remi that we all once knew very well on this site ?! If so, you could be bulldozer's reference and help him get a job..after all he did have to study to get to where he is...for me, it just comes naturally..

**ASCII stupid question, get a stupid ANSI !!!**

  • I sure could be his refference... I can remember at least 50 posts that point this out erlaly well .

  • I can read, funny guys!    You can quit talking about me in the 3rd person...

(and I am dubious of 50 posts!!  )

    I wasn't born stupid - I had to study.

  • Of course you can read...didn't you have to be able to read in order to study ?!?! 'sides, it's better than not being able to write..."erlaly".. - it took me a couple of seconds to figure that one out...this guy Ninja's etc...must be a erlaly closer relative of Remi's than he lets on...

there...we've made him the third person...ya happy now ?!

**ASCII stupid question, get a stupid ANSI !!!**

  • I can't have you come back and not complain about syntax can hi?

That was a erlaly good one .

  • Maybe not 50, but a good 45 for sure .

  • I think your new job is erlaly keeping you on your toes...you seem to be back in full swing - think Steve is the only one you have to beat now re: post count - is it because you've switched to 2005 now ?! Lucky man!

**ASCII stupid question, get a stupid ANSI !!!**

  • Well switched might be an overstatement.  I have to make this application compatible with 2000 as well.  So we basically design it for 2000 and retest on 2005 (at least now we are ).

And for me to be back in full swing would mean that Steve would be within a weeks distance (post-wise) which is far from being the case.  Give it 1-2 months at this pace...  not that anyone's keeping count .
