DB Reindex

  • Yesterday i did rebuild my index but while checking I came to know that there are still some fragmentation..what is the reason ?

  • Without seeing what you see, can't really tell you. What I can say is that rebuilding indexes does not eliminate fragmentation, it reduces it.

  • Index rebuilds aren't expected to make the fragmentation exactly zero. Also could be index is too small to be worth rebuilding.

  • To add to what the others have already cited... fragmentation is constantly happening on active systems that have any indexes that are based on non-temporally related columns... even during defragmentation if done online.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
