DB maintenance plans failed

  • Last month i successfully created 3 maintenance plans that backed up in the morning, afternoon, and midnight. They have been successfully backing up to a network folder on another server.

They ran from 8/18 to 8/28. Beginning on Monday 9/2 they started failing and have failed since. Is there something I may have missed. They are scheduled continously and have no end date. Would they need to be reset monthly?

  • Have you looked in the log for the job to see what error you are getting?

  • I wasn't able to find the log at first but when i did it said not enough disk space. thanks for your help.

  • Depending on the DR needs, you have to delete the backups eventually. You need to figure out when a backup is no longer needed, then create a job that deletes to old ones... or have the backups expire and be deleted in the maintenance plan.

I had the same problem, I had a 1 TB hd for backups on a 400 MB DB. I took a while, by that disk got filled up. It's always just a matter of when!

  • If you add an alert for Insufficent resources it would fire when it encounters a disk space issue. There is a script attached to an article I wrote on this site which will help you add alerts and database mail so it can mail the alert into your inbox.
