Datawarehouse Schema: column suffix Key or ID?

  • Hi,

In the relational database of the Datawarehouse which feeds the OLAP cubes. I notice that most of the time the key column uses the "Key" suffix. Example: CategoryKey. While in the relational DB used by various applications it is often named CategoryID.

Question: is the "key" column name suffix a preferred standard? Or is there any good reason to do so?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Whatever you choose for a naming convention the most important thing is to be consistent about using it. Perhaps the intention in your case was to distinguish the name of a key in the source system from its surrogate in the data warehouse.
