Database will not start-no eventlog written

  • One of my development servers crashed. It seems to have been a UPS problem. When I rebooted, the SQL Express instance was stopped. When I looked at the event logs, I saw that nothing had been written to them. Ho humm, i went to look at the Windows Error logs via the control panel and noticed that XP wouldn't let me in to administrative functions, or the settings ->network connections. In fact, other subdirectories such as Fonts are inaccessible.

I've tried starting it with a different account, and I tried logging in with a God-like administrative account. No joy. The other instance on the server is SQL Server 2005, and that works fine. There is plenty of disk space and the system seems to be working in other ways. The only other oddity i noticed after the crash was the failure of a wireless network dongle, in which I had to reinstall the driver.

    Best wishes,
    Phil Factor

  • Since it is down - try copying the application database .mdf and .ldf files to another instance and try to attach and see what happens.

As for you XP issues, well something sounds awry - have you tried a registry repair with the installation CD ? I've see this fix the type of problem you are describing.

    Let me know Phil ...
