I design our ERD diagrams but I find our developers and Business Analysts like to look at them too. Usually I reverse engineer the completed database implementation in VISIO or some other tool which is graphically superior (from a user perspective) to my design tools.
What tools do you use for graphical visualization of databases, especially for presentation to others (and that means that shading, gray scale, even colors for schemas, and especially hardcopy, is quite relevant)?

ErWin is a good product, though a bit expensive.

Visio has come a long way and it is relatively inexpensive.
I purchased ErWin a few times but I'm not aware that it has the functionality that you are looking for.

It's free and IMO awesome.
