Database Scanning Tools

  • We are currently in the process of bringing our Internet in-house. However there are numerous tasks that need to be performed beforehand. The biggest of these (from my point of view) is the locking down of the Database servers (Oracle & MSSQL).

I have been looking at a couple of applications to help keep track of the state of the servers. The applications that I have looked at so far are AppDetective (Application Security Inc) and Database Scanner (Internet Security Systems) both of these have their nice points.

The main factor with these applications is cost, but can you put a price on your data? I think not.

Are there any other applications that anyone knows of?

  • Check out eEye's Retina tool as well. There's a free download for class C subnet checks to test if you've got sa with no password.

A great site for information on locking down SQL Server is http://www.sqlsecurity.com/ as Chip tries to cover it all in his FAQ.
