I detached a database using the Enterprise Manager GUI (Right click database name, All Tasks > Detach Database), COPIED the .mdf and .ldf to a new instance and attached. We were unable to get the application to connect properly to the new instance and database so reverted back to the original SQL Server 2000 instance and database. When I re-attached the .mdf and .ldf files, the database name changed. The original .ldf and .mdf did not move, I copied the files to the new server.
Has anyone ever seen this before? We had to modify the working production application to point to a new database name.
My experience with SS2K is limited so hoping someone can shed some light.

Usually you specify the name when you attach a database to a new server. What did it get named?
