Database not showing as previously registered

  • When I attempt to open SQL Server Management Studio 2008, I get this error message: "Unable to read the list of previously registered servers on this system. Re-register your servers in the 'Registered Servers' window".

Is it the Domain Server that requires the registration? The database application is performing normally with no error messages. I am able to view tables, etc. via the Mgmt. Studio, but cannot run backup reports.

A quick search on google for the EXACT error message reveals the issue and how to solve it directly microsoft.

  • Thanks. In the meantime, I tried re-registering the server and I got a "connection successful" message, but it still does not appear in the list of registered servers (View - Registered Servers). I am on SQL2008, not yet on R2.

  • Oh,forgot to say I did find the error message and went to the microsoft site, but I am unable to complete their directions because nothing shows up under "database engine" from the registered servers window. This is all so strange because it has been fine for a few years and the only thing that changed was a reboot of the domain controller.

  • OK, this is so strange. I decided to try registering the server one more time...and it worked! I did nothing differently from the previous tries. In any case, the server now shows up in the registered server list and the error message no longer appears.
