All,
I'm looking at setting up column encryption on a 2016 Standard AG so one of the steps is to create the database master key.
When I look through tutorials e.t.c. there is always specific mention of backing up the master key. My understanding is the key is in the database so as I'm doing full database backups the key will be stored in my backups anyway?
I'm just wondering if I missed something as it's always specifically mentioned or whether it's just mentioned as good practice?
Thanks

The only way to restore the key is from the backup of the key. You can't get it from the database. That's why it's always mentioned - it's important to backup the key.

Thanks. That makes sense. I knew I'd missed something but couldn't work out what.
