Running SS2k8 on my home office network server "Lion". Lion is also domain controller for domain "Mortise". I am NOT running any email servers on my home office network. I use gMail and also a Linux Server at 1 and 1 dot com as my Web/Email host. I can create unlimited email accounts at 1and1.
I want to set up Database mail and operator notification on my SS2k8 server, but I'm not sure how to do it. Does it work just like Outlook? Doesn't it have to allow relay or something like that?
I'd prefer to use my gMail account, but I'm happy to use the 1and1 server if that's difficult.
Guidance, anyone?

In the case of database mail you can think of it like outlook in that it is a client of the SMTP server. However you do NOT need to install outlook or any other software. I *think* you can do it directly to GMail, you can use http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=86374 to give you the info you need, keep in mind just the SMTP stuff..

definitely Gmail is possible, and very handy for forum examples here too!
here's a screenshot of my working Gmail settings for database mail to use as a model:

I learned something today but I have a few questions on this topic.
This configuration should be used only on our own environments right?
I guess this kind of setup is never used on any of the corporate SQL Server environments?
To be more precise, where exactly could we use this configuration and would be accepted.

Mo,
The IT folks at a corporation have the job of supporting you, but first and foremost, of protecting corporate assets and intellectual property.
Many of them choose to prohibit most employees' access to third party email providers. Otherwise, employees and contractors might be able to inadvertantly (or purposefully...) transmit confidential information via third party email to outsiders (competitors, detractors, etc.) or import unwanted malware.
So ask, or try setting it up the way Lowell has kindly provided, but don't be upset if it fails, or if you're asked not to do it. It's for your company's protection.

Yes, The example I provided is probably more oriented to developers who need a proof of concept, and the ability to test.
You wouldn't use GMail in a corporate environment, youd use a comany email address, like notifications@yourDomain.com instead.
Access to gMail servers are blocked at my place of business, just as Jim noted, but in our case its more to avoid time wasting than it is to guard intellectual property.
