What gives here? Very frustrating. The C:\ drive has 92GB free space, however when I try to do a Backup through Enterprise Manager, the directory tree off the C:\ drive only reports 1.6 FB free. And sure enough, the backup fails when I try to do one (the database is about 3.8 GB). Saw many other reports of this same problem on Google (and even one on this forum), but no one really explained what causes it and how to solve it. This is not really "our" server (it belongs to one of our clients, but we provide support to an application we provide that runs on SQL server, and some SQL Server support). Some of the other references stated that this issue is common when trying to backup to Networked Drives, but I am trying to back up to the local C:\ drive. However, our client appears to have mapped a drive back to the C:\ drive (labeled "S:") and then created a share against this mapped drive. Could this be the problem? Enterprise manager is badly confused.

What file system is the C: drive formatted with?
Can you create a file outside of SQL that's larger than 4GB? (using something like CREATFIL from an NT Resource kit).

Not sure what how the C:\ drive was formatted, will not be able to look again until tomorrow. I will let you know. What kind of mis-match am I looking for here?

Since the database itself was close to 4GB the 4GB FAT32 file limit came to mind. It would have to formatted as NTFS to support larger files.

Is the folder for the backup a Mount Point? If so, you will only get the space available for the mount point, not the C: drive. I think Disk Manager should be able to tell you if its a Mount Point ...
