Database backup

  • Hello Guru,

Can anyone direct me and show me the best practice to setup database backup?

    Thanks,

    Edwin

  • Just remember that backups are very largely a business driven decision, not strictly technology. Talk to the business side of the company to understand what their expectactions of your ability to recover their data will be. You have to know their needs before you start making decisions otherwise, you may fail to meet them during an emergency. And that's not the time to find out.

    Good points.

Some databases may be for testing or development and don't change much. They may be ok to backup daily, or even weekly.

Very important production databases may need daily full backups, and transaction log backups every 10 minutes.

Other databases might get refreshed from production data and don't need to get backed up at all if they can easily be recreated.

So, "Best Practice" will vary, depending on your business and the importance of different databases.
