Data-tier application

    I'm trying to get an understanding of data-tier application.

    When i go thru the wizard it creates a dac package. Once the package is created it can be open and run. My confusion is the following, is a data tier the same as database backup?

    Please advise and/or lead me to the right direction for data tier application.

    I believe a Data-tier application helps maintain the structure of the database by providing a good way to manage the schema but does not store the underlying data itself. A database backup will the entire database (Schema and data).
