I would add that there is a third way of analytics in Microsoft Universe. Writing your own code directly in R and using 2016 SSRS to display results.

Could be, but R is unfriendly compared with Data Mining and Azure ML.
Data Mining is an extremely easy to learn tool. R is very ugly. Looks like a tool from the 80s.

You are correct. It is the hardest. But for some reason Microsoft is including R in SQL server 2016 and Power BI and seems that it will be the standard for Analytics.

Yes, R will be the standard for Data Mining. I guess Microsoft will try to create a nicer UI to work with it in the future.

For Microsoft Data Mining you need to purchase the Enterprise or the Business Intelligence Editions.
Not any more. Now Developer Edition is free for 2014 and 2016. This was announced on March 31st. 😉
