Data Mining for Fun
If it's in the game, it's in the game.
That's been the motto of EA Sports, implying that if something can happen in the real world game, they've added it to their video game. Now there's a company that might be reversing that, noting that if it seems like it statistically would happen in a computer world, let's use it in the real world.
Now this is the type of data mining I'd like to be involved in: Revolutionizing Football. Maybe if the Broncos would hire me to help them maintain a system like this, I'd get into this whole BI thing.
There's a company that's loaded up tons of statistical data about football plays and their outcomes. Then given a game situation, they run a series of simulations and give the coach an opinion on which of two plays he should run. So far it's illegal to use in a real football game, but it's an interesting idea. And it can be a good practice tool for coaches.
The data mining must be pretty cool, gather all the information, perhaps even about how your team and players have performed, and then run simulations. Depending on how quickly it can run, especially given that you may only have 10-20 seconds to decide what the defense will look like, it could be a great tool.
Personally I like the uncertainty of the game however. This would be a fun exercise and perhaps useful for various players in practice to think about what ways they might adapt their game to avoid being profiled, but I'd prefer to keep this away on game day. We play the game to determine the result. We don't base things on statistics or likely outcomes. The uncertainty of whether a given play will succeed or fail is what makes it exciting.
Still data mining in sports would be one of those few BI jobs that I think I could really enjoy.

I am a data warehouse developer so I am interested in data mining. But in this web site, most of members are DBA (I guess 90%) and SQL developers. It seemed not many people interested in data warehouse, or is it because data mining is new?
I used to be a SQL developer with basic DBA skills.

Hi,
I see that this post is really old, but wanted to reply anyway. You are looking for data mining for fun? I know of these fun games that are all about data mining. Not sure if that is what you meant or not, but wanted to post about them when I ran across your posting. I haven't ever seen anyone else interested... lol
Let me know what you think and if this is what you meant:
