I have been trying to apply CU3 but I'm still at RTM.
I went to a Microsoft download site and downloaded what was supposed to be CU3.

http://support2.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=2984923&kbln=en-US
It downloaded 477672_intl_x64_zip.exe and that extracted into SQLserver2014-KB2999197-64.exe.
I did another google and was directed to another site but I could not tell which file(s) to download?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes and it is not much help, unfortunately.
It list SQL Server 2014 RTM.

I execute:
SELECT @@Version
It returns:
12.0.2430.0RTMEnterprise Edition: Core-based Licensing (64-bit)
-- 12.0.2402 is supposed to be CU3
Apparently the RTM is a bug:

Build number 12.0.2430 is for CU 4 which would explain why CU 3 would not apply. It appears the server has already been patched to a higher CU.
