Cube Timeouts and property settings

  • I have a cube on our test server that received a timeout error while processing. Checking the properties tabs for the datasource, there is a Connection timeout and a General timeout setting. For some odd reason, I cannot change the Connection timeout setting. No matter what I set it to, it comes back up with the original setting. Is there a trick to change this?

Also, is there anything else to check in order to resolve a timeout error while processing a cube? I dont see nuthin else...

    Thanks!

  • The connection timeout setting bug was supposed to be fixed by SP2 for Analysis Services. I have not been able to get it to work and wonder if it is an inherent problem in the driver that AS uses to connect to SQL Server (I am assuming here that you are running SQL Server 2000). Anyway, I was having the same problems and it seemed to work fine after setting the general timeout property to a very high value. Maybe this is something to post on the ms sql server newsgroup board and maybe ms will pick up on it if they haven't yet and fix this once and for all...it is a pain especially if you have large dimension tables because of the distinct count queries that AS performs in the course of a cube update...

  • Yep, SQL2k SP2 and AS SP2. Does that mean a value of 0 isn't "no timeout"? I suspect the problem isn't the connection timeout but the general timeout anyways. I'll pump up the general timeout to a very high value and see if that takes care of it.

    Thanks!

  • Oh crap, I should've tried it first. The general setting doesn't stick either. I tried changing it to 9999 but nope. How do you change it?

  • I will check this when I get in the office shortly, but basically as I understand it, a value of zero should mean no timeout at all...however, I am sure I had to set mine to a very high value. If you can't change it on the general setting, I am betting that is the only place and you are out of luck...this issue has been a major source of consternation for me...I really wish MS would fix this!

    Back to you soon...

  • Sooooo...I assume you right clicked on the Analysis Server in AS, selected properties, and then clicked on the processing tab...there is a checkbox there for server timeout and if you unchecked that then the server theoretically should not time out...if you have done that then I wouldn't have a clue where to go from there except maybe to try uninstalling AS, reinstall it, and reinstall sp2 for AS...perhaps someone else on the list knows of an alternative approach that is not quite so drastic...anyone?

  • I didn't see the timeout setting there. But unfortunately, it is already unchecked (and the value is 0 and grayed out). The timeout settings I referred to where in the datasource, which, due to that bug you mention, cannot be changed.

Hmmm, where to turn now? I suppose I can try checking the server timeout and making it 9999 or something like that. I'll post tomorrow (after processing) if that works.

    Thanks, Jay

  • No luck so far. Since the datasource timeout settings cannot be cahnged, is there a way to swap the current datasource with a new datasource? I can't delete the current one because it gives an error that it is 'in use' by other cubes and dimensions. I'm thinking that maybe there is a trick to swap datasources somehow. Anyone know how that might be done?

  • Jay,

Did you try adding a new datasource, changing the datasource of your cube & shared dimensions to the new source, then deleting the old source? I know you can add a new source so that you can have more than one data connection per cube, but have not played with changing the source for existing dimensions, etc.

  • Stupid question time - how do you change the datasource? I added a second datasource, but within the cube and shared dimensions editor, the original datasource is grayed out. Do I have to completely delete the dimension or cube and rebuilt from scratch around the new datasouce?

    A.S. is driving me nuts!

  • I think you have to drop the cubes and shared dimensions, then rebuild them in order to utilize a different datasource...but before you do that, I wonder if it is possible to change the datasource for a cube via DSO...have you tried searching under clsDataSource in BOL? Otherwise, I think the only option is to drop the cubes and shared dimensions and rebuild them...
