    One comment on your solution for future readers. It requires you to scan your primary table from start to finish TWICE, which could add up to a lot of work if you were doing this to a table with millions of rows. ( I don't believe that is the case here.) The advantage of adding a temporary table was that it would read the main table one time and produce a smaller table for the second scan needed to produce the counts.
